Sweden is the biggest country in Scandinavian. The name coming from Skadi she is the goddess of the mountains and forests. From the north to the south of Sweden measures some 1600km.
The country combines historical towns and coastal villages along with the largest wilderness in Europe. Vast forests and crystal clear lakes are scattered across the country.
Härjedalen is one of the highest provinces in Sweden. The province’s mountains are perpetually snow covered and having the southern most glacier rich in views over forests, mires and moors.
The first inhabitants of the province were the Norwegian Viking and the area itself only became Swedish in 1645 after a long period of war.

The area has no more than 12000 inhabitants that’s a square kilometre per person. The local people “the Sami” have left their mark on the province’s culture. Farming villages, reindeer, forests and rivers still untouched is the characteristics of this area.
Here it is possible to experience everything from the alpine peaks of Helags to the vast ice covered lakes and frozen wood landscape.

The Northern lights

During the winter season the soft mountains are excellent for skiing and the best place to experience the Northern lights or Aurora Borealis.
We were once out on the mountains above Tänndalen with the light of the Aurora lighting our way, a spiritual experience. The lights usually appears about two or three times per night. We have been lucky to experience this amazing event every year and it has never been the same.

lights

The northern lights is certainly one of the most spectacular of nature’s phenomena. It was the Italian scientist Galileo Galilei (1564-1642) who first used the expression Aurora Borealis. In the past the population living in the far north, often created mythology and superstition to explain the dancing spirits in the sky. Many believed it was a message from the creator telling them that he still cared for them. For others the northern lights were thought to be reflections of slain warriors battling valiantly in the heavenly skies for eternity.
